Who we are:

In every corner of Britain, Royal Voluntary Service mobilises volunteers to support people in need and the NHS. Our volunteers work with healthcare teams and in communities providing practical help and emotional support when people are struggling to cope.

Royal Voluntary Service is one of Britain’s largest volunteering organisations providing vital, responsive services which support public health, social care and wellbeing. Our volunteers support the NHS and people in need, with the aim of building resilience in local communities.

What are we looking for?

You'll need to have a friendly personality with the ability to observe and identify areas of concern. You'll have good communication and listening skills, with a non-judgemental attitude towards an individual's circumstances and a willingness to ensure confidentiality. Your role will involve elements of lone working and building a relationship with those you visit, which is hugely rewarding for both you and the people you support. We also have opportunities available for people with specific skills, so please tell us what your strengths are when we meet.

What would you be doing as a volunteer?

Our volunteers offer six weeks one-to-one, short-term, practical support, which enables adult patients to return home with confidence when no other support is available. You might help with shopping, assisted walks, collecting prescriptions, transport to medical and social appointents, sign posting to community groups, or just being there when people begin to do things for themselves.

You'll provide practical help like stocking up on groceries or heating up the house, as well as emotional support to get them back on their feet and regain some independence. Once you've got to know them and have helped them to settle in, you'll stay in touch regularly for a few weeks.

You will receive relevant training for your role and will be welcomed and supported by a friendly local team.
