We would like to re-start the Homework Club at Powerhouse Library from September 2025.
Mondays 4:30-6:30. Minimum commitment of three months required. You will be expected to stay for the whole session.

What you will get out of volunteering with us:

You will gain experience of teaching and educating.
You will gain experience working with young people and children in a group setting or on a one-to-one basis.
The skills you gain are valuable and can be added to CVs or applications.
You will be part of something worthwhile and hopefully have some fun!

Who we are looking for:

Someone who likes working with children and young people would benefit from this opportunity.
An outgoing, confident personality would be ideal.
Some knowledge of the school system would be ideal. 
You need to be able to communicate well with children and be able to find information needed, either online, or in books.
 
You will receive a full induction.

Who we are

Powerhouse Library in Moss Side is part of Manchester Libraries and a hub for learning, creativity, and connection. The library runs regular chess sessions that support young people’s confidence, focus, and social skills. These sessions are hugely popular with local families and young people.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for volunteers with an interest in chess who enjoy working with children and young people. You don’t need to be a grandmaster—just someone with basic chess knowledge, a friendly manner, and enthusiasm for helping others learn and enjoy the game.

What would you be doing as a volunteer?

• Supporting regular chess sessions at Powerhouse Library
• Helping young players learn the rules and improve their skills
• Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment
• Encouraging turn-taking, resilience, and good sportsmanship
• Assisting library staff with session set-up and tidying

Volunteers should be available during after-school hours or weekends (exact times can be discussed). Training and support will be provided.
