Description of the opportunity:

Who we are:

HostNation is a small charity working in Greater Manchester, London and Tyneside that connects local residents with refugees and asylum seekers in need of social connection and friendship. Since 2017, we’ve made over 1,000 befriending matches and helped create welcoming experiences for those rebuilding their lives in the UK. Our aim is to reduce social isolation and support integration through human connection.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for friendly, empathetic people who speak fluent English, aged 18+ who live and work in Greater Manchester. Volunteers should be able to give a few hours each week—often in the evenings or weekends—to meet up with a refugee or asylum seeker. We are particularly in need of male volunteers at present. We ask for a minimum three-month commitment.

What would you be doing as a volunteer?

As a befriender, you’ll be matched with someone based on shared interests. You’ll meet up regularly to take walks, visit cafes, attend free local events, or simply chat—helping your new friend practise English and learn about life in the UK. You’ll be fully supported with an induction, regular check-ins, and guidance throughout your volunteering.
