About Us

The Mary Kiden Centre is a community-driven supplementary school based in Greater Manchester. We provide academic support, creative opportunities, and cultural enrichment for children and young people, particularly from the South Sudanese community but also the wider local population. Our Saturday School is delivered by a passionate team of volunteer educators and supported by personal donations.

We aim to:

• Advance education for children and young people (Years 7 to GCSE) through tutoring in Maths, English, Science, and other core subjects.
• Advance arts and culture through creative writing, poetry, spoken word, and heritage studies.
• Promote social inclusion for women and families facing cultural or economic barriers.
• Relieve poverty and hardship through advice, training, and access to resources.

Role Purpose

To plan and deliver engaging, high-quality lessons in your specialist subject area, helping students improve academic performance, build confidence, and develop a positive sense of identity.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver lessons in one or more of the following: Mathematics, English, Science, Creative Writing, or Poetry.
• Adapt teaching methods to meet the needs of learners from diverse backgrounds and abilities.
• Encourage cultural pride and identity through inclusive and heritage-aware teaching practices.
• Support students in preparing for school exams and achieving their academic potential.
• Liaise with parents/guardians to discuss progress and provide feedback.
• Contribute to a safe, respectful, and positive learning environment.
• Work collaboratively with other volunteers to support whole-centre activities and events.

Person Specification

Essential

• Qualified teacher status (QTS) or significant teaching/tutoring experience.
• Strong subject knowledge in one or more relevant areas.
• Passion for supporting the educational and personal development of young people.
• Commitment to equality, diversity, and cultural inclusion.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Willingness to volunteer regularly on Saturdays.

Desirable

• Experience working with students from migrant, refugee, or minority ethnic backgrounds.
• Knowledge of African or South Sudanese heritage and cultures.
• Experience in creative arts education (poetry, spoken word, creative writing).

The objects of the CIO are:

a) To advance the education of children and young people, in particular but not exclusively those aged 11–16 (Years 7 to GCSE), in Manchester and surrounding areas, through the provision of Saturday schools, tutoring in core subjects, and educational enrichment activities;

b) To advance arts and culture for the public benefit by providing opportunities for young people to engage in creative writing, poetry, spoken word, and cultural heritage education;

c) To promote social inclusion for women and families who are socially excluded on the grounds of their gender, economic disadvantage, or cultural barriers, by providing workshops, peer support, and access to educational and empowerment resources;

d) To relieve poverty or financial hardship among women and families by providing advice, training, and access to support services.
