Caritas Diocese of Salford is leading the Afghan Welcome Project, a partnership initiative supporting the safe and legal resettlement of 125 Afghan households in the North West UK and nearby areas over the next five years. The project is part of the government-funded Communities for Afghans programme and focuses on helping Afghan individuals and families who have been waiting since August 2021 for permanent homes in the UK.
The project works with community groups, volunteers and partner organisations to secure housing, provide tailored settlement support, and help families access English classes, healthcare, education and employment opportunities. It aims to help families build confidence, independence and community connections within 12 to 18 months.
Many of the families include people who worked with the British Army or British Embassy in Kabul, as well as vulnerable groups such as female leaders, journalists and ethnic minorities. The project also promotes cultural awareness and strengthens local communities through welcome, practical support and inclusion.
We’re looking for community groups and volunteers who can support us with:
● Individually or forming a group of at least six volunteers for 12 months or more.
● Finding and securing housing in Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Liverpool, Lancaster or Leeds for Afghan families over the next five years.
● Matching with an Afghan family to provide tailored support for a person, couple or family, helping them to settle and become independent.
● Providing individualised welcome, cultural awareness and community support.
● Giving practical and relational support, ensuring families are supported to access English classes, healthcare, education, and work opportunities.
● Building family independence and connection within 12 to 18 months, helping the families build confidence, friendships, and self-sufficiency.
