Description of the opportunity:

The place at Platt Lane – Fallowfield Community Library and resource centre are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable volunteer to help lead & support our new homework club for young people.

Duties may involve helping a child with their homework or supporting them to practice their spellings or English, encouraging young people to try their hardest, You will work closely with our current tutor and assist throughout the session.

You will also help with setting up and clearing, and tidying up after the session.

The Homework Club has launched with this new term and is held at The Place at Platt Lane, Every Thursday during term time 4pm - 5pm.

Volunteers will need to factor in the centre 10-15 minutes before and after a session for setup and clear up/Evaluation time, as part of the delivery team.

 

Responsibilities

In these sessions will provide a safe, friendly, and warm space for young people aged 8-11 to complete their homework.

As a volunteer in our homework clubs your evening could be as varied as the young people we support.

You don’t need to be an expert in the curriculum, your role is to support the children and young people to complete the homework to the best of their ability. 

This may involve encouraging them, helping them to create an environment suited to their learning needs, and asking targeted questions to help them access their own memory.

Skills & Qualities

The Place at Platt Lane has a commitment to safeguarding and protecting children, young people and vulnerable adults and we require all volunteers to commit to our culture of safeguarding.

You must be aged 18 or over to be considered for this role.

 

Personal qualities needed to be a great homework club volunteer are:

• Willingness to undergo a DBS check.

• Keen to see young people fulfil their potential.

• Resilience and can-do attitude.

• Problem solving skills.

• Being a good listener and possess excellent communication skills with the ability to build rapport with young people.

• Positivity, good motivation skills.

• Patience along with being able to enforce boundaries and good behavior. 

 

When & Where?

The Homework Club is held at The Place at Platt Lane – Fallowfield Community Library and Resource Centre, M14 7FB on a Thursday Afternoon, 4pm - 5:15pm.

Volunteers are needed in the centre 15 minutes before and after a session for setup and clear up/Evaluation time, as part of the delivery team.

We welcome volunteers who are available to commit to one session per week during term time.

 

Training and Support Offered/Expenses

You will receive a full induction, including an introduction to GDPR and a number of safeguarding children and young people courses.

We can work with all our volunteers to identify opportunities for further training and development on a one-to-one basis with our dedicated volunteer coordinator.
