Volunteers' Week Stories: Bian

Bian, 28, from Syria, volunteers with Syrian Community Council.

My role at Syrian Community Council is to provide aid and support others in order to help people and in society in general. I am an Arabic language teacher. I teach children to read, write, and speak their mother tongue, in addition to enable them understanding basic grammar.

I have been working as a volunteer for almost a year. I was looking to gain more experience and get involved with the community, in addition to provide the knowledge I gained through the years to benefit of others. Volunteer work seeks to create a cooperative human spirit between members of the same society and different societies to achieve the goal of stronger community.

I have developed my personal skills whilst volunteering with Syrian Community Council. I have had many opportunities for participation such as interaction with volunteers, increasing self-confidence and developing leadership skills.

The benefits of volunteering for me are the feeling of love and respect, increased self-confidence and enhancing my resume. I’ve always felt at home nearby volunteers who share similar views and have the same goal of giving away to create a better tomorrow for us all.

Do not wait for someone to come to you and offers you volunteer work - take the initiative and look for it. Be a volunteer to make your presence in this life more beautiful and to achieve what you deserve and always dreamt of.
