Our everyday rights include things like a decent job and home, enough to eat, clothes to wear, a healthy environment, and the chance to learn. They are protected by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

But we know that right now, across the UK, far too many people are experiencing violations of these rights. From people living in damp housing that makes them ill (right to adequate standard of living), to those sitting on long waiting lists for healthcare while they get sicker (right to health), to poor and unlawful working conditions and wages that don’t allow a decent standard of living (right to work, and just and favourable conditions at work).

The UK is undergoing a review of these rights by a group of experts at the United Nations called the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). This Committee wants to hear from civil society in the UK about the state of our everyday rights and what we think needs to happen to make things better.

Just Fair already sent a report to the first stage of the Committee's review in 2023, informed by evidence from groups across the UK. We're now in the final stages of the review, and lots of groups, including Just Fair will be sending another report to update the Committee on recent developments and suggest solutions that the Committee may wish to recommend to the UK Government.

Join Just Fair’s event to learn about the process and how you can have your voice heard.

This training will cover:

  • What is ICESCR and the UK Government's obligations?
  • What is the review process?
  • Why get involved?
  • Getting involved – how to: hold the UK Government to account and use it in your own campaigning.

This training is aimed at groups and individuals across the UK working on human rights and/or social justice issues. No prior knowledge is required.

Just Fair is the only UK-wide civil society organisation focusing on everyday human rights – economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR) – across the UK.
