Aliens touch-down in MediaCity with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation

9 Jul 2014 - 11:39 by michelle.foster

The Rio Ferdinand Foundation launches its creative summer programme. In August 2014, MediaCityUK will play host to an array of creative short courses and outdoor activities.

Young people will investigate, document and generate media content around an imaginary alien landing.

Gary Stannett, Rio Ferdinand Foundation CEO, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for creative young people to start to understand what kind of media jobs there are, to gain technical skills and qualifications, and to have their achievements celebrated by industry professionals. We are grateful to our funders Big Lottery for making this possible.”

The Rio Ferdinand Foundation has teamed up with the University of Salford and other partners to put together a spectacular summer programme. The courses and activities are designed to raise the aspirations of the young people attending, and to support efforts to bridge the gap between Salford’s communities and MediaCityUK.

The activities will be led by industry professionals and are completely free of charge for the young people attending. On top of being heaps of fun, all participants on arts courses will work towards gaining a level 1 Arts qualification.

Michelle Arstall, Rio Ferdinand Foundation Young Ambassador, said: “We are all buzzing about this programme. It’s something really different and it’s a fantastic opportunity to just have loads of fun but to leave with new skills and qualifications at the end of it.”

Activities on offer to young people aged 11+ include:
• Alien Animation with Albino Mosquito
6 to 8 Aug, 11am-4pm at University of Salford, MediaCity Campus
• Introduction to Stunt Work and Parkour with Matt Boote of Evolve Combat Sport and Parkour Centre
