Standing Tall match people who have experienced homelessness with a stable, living wage job within local businesses.
Standing Tall are currently recruiting residents of Manchester who have a spare room and spare empathy to become an Amici hosts. Standing Tall are reaching out to volunteers who already understand the problem Manchester faces with homelessness and have that present empathy for the cause. Standing Tall will support hosts by paying them £500 per month for 6 months to welcome a person who is in full-time work and has fallen on tough times.
The Standing Tall model has worked successfully in Birmingham over the last year and Standing Tall are keen to bring that success to Manchester. As you may already know, there is an immense amount of talent on the streets and homeless shelters of Manchester and it's Standing Tall's job to find it.

Payment: £500 per month for the period working with an individual
Background: Standing Tall matches individuals going through tough times into living wage stable jobs in local businesses to enable them to move away from the street for good. The organisation understands safe accommodation is also important in enabling an individual to transition away from the streets.
Role purpose: Standing Tall’s Amici each provide a safe home and work alongside the individual moving away from the street. Standing Tall matches each Amici with an individual and works with them for 3-6 months. When the individual is ready, Standing Tall will work with him, her or them to move into their own independent accommodation. The key focus is to work with an individual concentrating on their strengths, assets and aspirations so that they take control of their lives and move towards meaningful independent living. The Amici will be supported by the Director with regular contact and training.
Key responsibilities: In line with Standing Tall’s values, Amici:
- Provide safe and welcoming home accommodation to enable the individual to settle
- Work alongside the individual providing a personalised coaching approach for those going through the toughest of life’s transitions to prepare to move to independent living when ready
Key objectives and responsibilities
Safe and welcoming accommodation
- Provide safe accommodation, which includes a private room and access to good standard communal living spaces
- Provide a welcoming home to enable the individual to settle
- Comply on an ongoing basis with Standing Tall’s safe home checklist
Working with an individual to enable transition to independent living
- To work alongside the individual in line with Standing Tall’s values and strength based training
- To hold 1 to 1 conversations with your individual on a monthly basis at least, to enable the individual to set goals and discuss the progress and agree additional actions
- To build a strong working relationship and demonstrate a consistency of position to enable the individual to progress towards independent living
- To enable the individual to connect and participate in relevant communities as a means to build his, her or their capacity
Compliance
- To undertake all necessary induction and training sessions including Standing Tall’s ‘Can Do’ approach
- To be fully aware of, and compliant with, policies and procedures (in particular those relating to Equality and Diversity, Health and Safety and Safeguarding)
- To complete and submit Incident report forms when necessary and report any safeguarding concerns to the Safeguarding lead
Review and monitoring
- To record monthly 121 conversations with your individual and submit to Standing Tall
- To collect relevant information on behalf of Standing Tall to measure the individual’s progress on Standing Tall’s social impact indicators
- To attend monthly 121 conversations with a Standing Tall staff member to discuss progress being made
Other
- As directed to undertake work not specifically referred to above
- Undertake training as required by Standing Tall

- You have a strong sense of your own identity but excel working with others towards a common goal

- You know about homelessness and what it takes to survive on the street;
- You don’t like using labels unless you have to
- You have a ‘can do’, entrepreneurial approach, not afraid to challenge or be challenged and above all, a good sense of humour to survive our fast paced environment
Amici should have the following general attributes:
A. Education and training
IT literate with the ability to use Word, Excel, Microsoft Office but training can be given if not
B. Relevant Experience
Experience of working in a person-centred way with vulnerable adults presenting with significant levels of need and risk, professional case management and the ability to devise and deliver highly personalised support.
C. Skills, abilities and knowledge
- A good understanding of the meaning of quality in relation to service delivery;
- Sound analytical reasoning skills (including verbal and numerical reasoning) and creative lateral thinking;
- Outcome, strength and solution focused;
- Possess the sensitivity and flexibility to find ways of working with, and motivating, individuals who may historically have a low level of engagement;
- The ability to communicate effectively in a variety of settings, experience of partnership working and networking;
- Understanding and experience of working within professional boundaries, confidentiality and of power dynamics;
- A good and current understanding of safeguarding and managing risk;
- The ability to produce accurate and timely records of meetings
D. Other requirements
In possession of, or willing to apply for, Enhanced DBS.
Ownership of a safe and welcoming home with access to a private bedroom and communal facilities.
