The Royal Literary Fund has worked with Communities First for several years, offering free workshops in writing skills, led by our professional writers. We also work with Recovery Colleges, the NHS, unions and the voluntary sector.
In June 2024 Anushka Swannell, a Volunteer Development Worker at Macc, did a piece of research on ‘The Current Climate of Student Volunteering in Greater Manchester.’ We invite you to the launch event for this research, where she will outline her findings and key policy recommendations. There will also be opportunities for you to discuss your experience as a student volunteer, or involving student volunteers, and how we can improve this in future.
Written by Macc’s Capacity Building Team, this article was initially composed for Macc members. Membership is free and open to all with a vested interest in the city of Manchester.

Course Overview
92% of UK trustees are white, older, and above average income and education. Just 8% of charity trustees are from Black, Asian, and other minority backgrounds, and fewer than 3% are women of colour. 70% of charities find it difficult to recruit trustees, and there are an estimated 100,000 unfilled charity trustee positions in the UK. This half day training course is designed to demystify trustee recruitment for small organisations, and ensure that equity, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of your trustee recruitment.
Rob Jackson, an international leading voice in volunteer management and published author on the subject, will be delivering a 1 day training course for Volunteer Managers and Coordinators.
Morning session: Volunteering is changing...and so must you
Volunteering is changing and old models of how to recruit and retain people are increasingly outdated. The session will explore some of these changes, and what you can do to adapt your volunteering offer.
All the hard work that goes into recruiting volunteers is often lost due to lack of management.
We will use a variety of learning methods to help you ensure that your volunteers are managed well.
This course is suitable for paid staff and volunteers who have a responsibility for managing volunteers.
