Consultation on proposed changes to the English Indices of Deprivation

The Indices of Deprivation 2010 provide a relative measure of deprivation for small areas (Lower-layer Super Output Areas) across England. The Index of Multiple Deprivation combines indices for the following seven different domains of deprivation:
• Income deprivation
• Employment deprivation
• Education, skills and training deprivation
• Health deprivation and disability
• Crime
• Barriers to housing and services
• Living environment deprivation

This project aims to update and refine the Indices of Deprivation 2010 by:
• reviewing the indicators included in the Indices of Deprivation 2010 to determine if they remain fit for purpose and where there is a clear rationale for doing so, identify potential changes to the indicators in each domain;
• assessing the current data landscape and identifying changes to previously used sources, as well as any new sources; and
• reviewing whether the statistical methods used in the production of the Indices of Deprivation 2010 are still justified and assess if alternative methods are available and the strengths and weaknesses of any such alternatives.

This consultation seeks views on the following proposed changes to the indicators:
• Two new indicators are proposed, based on improved availability of robust data
• Four modifications to indicators, due to improved data or estimation methods
• Four indicators will be dropped, as these are no longer available or appropriate to include

The deadline for responses is 19 December 2014.
