An innovative new seven step plan from sight loss charity Henshaws that can help blind and visually impaired people receive the support they need has been launched nationwide this World Sight Day, on 11 October 2018.
The plan is designed to support people who are unsure of what they should do next, and outlines seven simple steps covering everything from getting an initial professional opinion, to getting access from local organisations. It has been developed over the past two years with support from Henshaws service users, and has received endorsement from NHS Greater Manchester and support from Vision UK.
In a 2016 survey, Henshaws found that less than half of respondents felt they didn't understand their eye condition, 42% had not had the CVI and registration process explained to them, and 37% had not received any information about organisations that could support them. Henshaws is committed to combatting this, and this plan will help ensure that people who are experiencing sight loss are made aware of the available services and support which can help them retain or regain their independence.
Henshaws’ Director of Community Services, Robert Cooper, said:
“We understand how scary losing your sight can be, and we’re committed to ensuring that no one goes through it alone and without support. These simple steps are designed to provide a structured response to an often chaotic situation and help lay the foundations for an enjoyable, independent life.”
Dharmesh Patel, Chair of Greater Manchester Local Eye Health Network NHS, said:
“The Greater Manchester Eye Health Network worked collaboratively to develop the 7 steps guide and we are delighted that this is being rolled out nationally to people with sight loss.”
The initiative is being rolled out nationally across participating sight loss organisations, and the charity is encouraging anyone affected by or working in sight loss to distribute and spread the word about the Seven Steps guide.
