International Volunteer Day 2025 is a global observance created by the UN General Assembly to celebrate the power and impact of volunteers. What began as a mandate in 1985 has grown into a worldwide movement recognising the essential role of volunteering in strengthening communities and driving progress. This year’s IVD also marks the global launch of the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IVY 2026), highlighting how volunteers accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
The 2025 theme, Every Contribution Matters, resonates deeply with what we see across Manchester every day. Volunteers bring knowledge, energy, care, insight, and lived experience to the issues that matter most in our city. Contributions take many forms - from short-term acts of kindness to long-term commitment, from governance and leadership roles to community-based action. Each one strengthens the collective effort to build a fairer, more connected Manchester.
