Local cooperative takes a 'fashion fast' to raise funds for garment workers

16 Feb 2017 - 11:21 by michelle.foster

Could you wear just six items of clothing for six weeks? Local cooperative Stitched Up take on the challenge to raise money for clothes factory workers around the world.

Next month, Stitched Up from Chorlton are taking a ‘fashion fast’ to raise money for the Labour Behind the Label Trust, who support garment workers worldwide in their quest for better working conditions while making clothes for the UK high street. The Stitched Up team will be joining the challenge to wear only six items of clothing for six weeks, starting from 1 March. Cambodian garment workers

Sustainable fashion collective Stitched Up exist to promote an alternative to bland high street ‘fast fashion’. Their six-part manifesto includes a message of solidarity with clothing factory labourers of the world. They are mainly women, often working for low wages and with no access to trade unions.

Stitched Up member Emily Wade says: “I’ve done this challenge once before in 2014, and I found it incredibly hard. Wearing the same few outfits over and over again for a month and a half is deeply frustrating. We’re committed to doing this for a cause that’s very close to our hearts.”

The cooperative will be blogging about their experiences along the way, sharing ideas for creating multiple outfits from only six garments, as well as other creative ideas for dealing with the challenge - including repairing and upcycling their clothes as they go.

Fellow co-operative member Bryony Moore added: “as well as raising money for charity, we hope this challenge will inspire people to think about how much clothing they buy. If we can get by wearing just six items for six weeks, why on earth do we have such cluttered closets?”
