Share your experience and help build inclusive volunteering in sport for sanctuary seekers.
Manchester City of Sanctuary is carrying out a feasibility study to explore how sanctuary seekers (refugees and asylum seekers) can be better supported to volunteer in sports, physical activity, and movement.
This research is part of a project funded by the Volunteering Community of Practice for Volunteering in Sport, Physical Activity and Movement, supported by GM Moving. The project aims to build understanding and share best practice on how to create inclusive, welcoming volunteering opportunities within these sectors.
At this stage, Manchester City of Sanctuary are focusing on research and insight gathering. Manchester City of Sanctuary want to learn from organisations who:
- Already involve sanctuary seekers in volunteering, or have tried to
- Are open to exploring how they might create more inclusive volunteering opportunities in the future
Through this feasibility study, Manchester City of Sanctuary are hoping to uncover:
- What organisations are already doing (if anything) to engage sanctuary seekers as volunteers
- What barriers or opportunities they see in doing so
- What adaptations might be needed to support sanctuary seekers to participate fully and meaningfully in volunteering roles
If your organisation works in sports, physical activity, or movement and you’re able to share your experience or insight, Manchester City of Sanctuary would love to have a conversation.

Your experiences will help shape a better understanding of how Manchester City of Sanctuary can make volunteering in these sectors more inclusive and accessible for sanctuary seekers across Greater Manchester.
