3 Oct 2014 - 09:46 by michelle.foster

The Breakthrough UK National Independent Living Awards celebrate the organisations or individuals that show commitment to - and innovation in - the independence of disabled people.

Independent living means having the same choice and control in our day-to-day lives as non-disabled people.

There are five categories, all with prestigious judges:
• Influencing the participation of disabled people in society – judged by Lord Chris Holmes
• Providing greater choice, control and independent living – judged by Asif Iqbal MBE
• Enabling disabled people to pursue and develop their careers – judged by Evelyn Asante-Mensah OBE
• Working towards excellence – judged by Dr Jenny Morris OBE
• The Overall Independent Living Initiative – recognising outstanding achievement - judged by Baroness Jane Campbell DBE
