National Numeracy Challenge – Don’t let numbers hold you back!

21 Apr 2015 - 15:40 by cheryl.mcalister

The National Numeracy Challenge helps adults learn the maths needed for everyday life.

Around half the adult population have numeracy skills at the level expected of children at primary school and three-quarters are below the target level for school-leavers.

As well as improving performance, the Challenge also aims to transform negative attitudes towards maths and numeracy and to create a positive “can do” approach.

So if you’re the type of person who says ‘I can’t do Maths’ you can have a go at the challenge and start saying ‘I can do Maths’!

If you are interested in trying out the challenge Macc has a dedicated link: www.nnchallenge.org.uk/macc1

It is all done confidentially and the link takes you to a website that you can use to improve your skills/confidence with numeracy. It takes you through a challenge check-up so you can see if/where you need to improve and then helps you to improve your skills either on-line with the challenge or with other training providers.

Examples of where maths can help

  • Work - Why does maths really matter at work?
Students preparing for work in the care sector need to estimate and allocate time, enter dates and other numerical data accurately, and be able to add and subtract.
  • Money - Maths skills help you make the most of your money.
Use maths to check you’ve been paid and taxed the right amount.
  • Health - Good maths skills help you stay healthy
Use maths to manage your medicine, and understand how much you need and how often to take it.
  • Day to day life - Being numerate is a life skill.
Being numerate helps you understand information, which gives you more confidence when making decisions.
  • Media and Adverts - Everyday maths skills help you understand information.
Being numerate helps you get the best deal, and avoid being ripped off.
  • For your children - Improve your maths skills and give your children a head start.
With better maths skills you can really help your children - with homework and with their confidence too.
