In response to rising demand as a result of Strep A infections, NHS England ran a webinar to share information with the VCSE. They are keen to engage communities and community organisations 
to share accurate information about the risks, and about when and how to seek medical help.
Key points from the webinar:
- Despite rumours, there is not a general shortage of antibiotics used to treat Strep A and other conditions
- Children who have received the influenza vaccine are not more vulnerable to Strep A
- Having the flu can make children more vulnerable to invasive Strep A and so the flu vaccine can reduce vulnerability
- There has been a 30% increase in 111 calls, many from carers concerned for their children about Strep A, which has contributed to delays. Callers are encouraged to stay on the line until connected as this can save them a visit to the GP later
The NHS and the UKHSA have asked the VCSE sector to help disseminate information so it can reach as many people as possible. They are working on translating guidance into the ten most common languages in the UK as well as Ukrainian, braille, large print, and other accessible formats.
