Sign up and save money on your energy bills

23 Jan 2014 - 10:31 by michelle.foster

A newly launched energy-saving scheme will offer you a range of choices to help reduce your heating bills.

After major energy suppliers recently announced they were increasing their prices, Manchester City Council are urging residents to register their interest in a collective bulk-buy scheme by visiting: www.betterenergydeals.org.uk or calling 0800 988 2426. This scheme is supported by all the councils in Greater Manchester.

To take part, you just need to provide basic information, including your current gas and electricity supplier and how much you pay each month.

You will then be able to benefit from a ‘reverse auction’, being held by the organisers on Tuesday 4 March, when energy suppliers will bid for your business by offering you their best prices.

However, you don’t have to accept their offers, as there will be a range of alternatives available at the time based on how much energy you use.

A pair of similar energy switching schemes held last year helped 4,577 households to save a total of more than half a million pounds and it’s hoped that even greater savings can be made this year.

Although the scheme will be targeted directly at people living in Greater Manchester, it will be open to anyone in the UK to join.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council and Chairman of the Greater Manchester Low Carbon Hub, said: “The cost of keeping warm is a major concern to millions of people and I would urge anyone interested in saving money to take advantage of this scheme – particularly as the more people sign up the better the deals that will be available.

“You don’t have to accept the auction offer, and anyone who registers will even be given a range of alternative offers, so residents have absolutely nothing to lose by signing up for this.”
