On Thursday 18 August 2016 we announced the winner for our Spirit of Manchester 2016 Best Community Space Award – congratulations to Growing in the City!
This is the first year of the Best Community Space award and we decided that you the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector in Manchester should decide the winner. We are delighted that over 700 votes were cast in our online vote.
We invited all of the nominees: Friends of Angel Meadow; Growing in the City; The LGBT Centre; LGBT Foundation’s Community Resource Centre; Merseybank Estate Group; and Whitemoss Club for Young People to Macc’s original office in historic Swan Buildings for a special celebration event.

Mike Wild, Chief Executive delivered an impassioned speech and announced the winner, which was all broadcast live on our website.
Mike Wild said:
“All across Manchester there are spaces and facilities nurtured and maintained by local voluntary and community groups, charities and social enterprises. These include parks, community centres and spaces which have been reclaimed after being left abandoned for years. In a city which is increasingly busy and driven by an ever expanding consumer economy, these community spaces offer something different though no less important to the life of local people. We wanted to recognise and celebrate these spaces and raise awareness of the brilliant work done by these groups in shaping the fabric of the city.
Many congratulations to Growing in the City for winning the Best Community Space Award in our first ever online vote. They are worthy winners but it has to be said, looking at the wealth of talent in all the nominated groups, there were no losers in this competition!”
