We're looking for someone who combines real technical expertise with a genuine commitment to the values that drive Macc's work. This is a senior role requiring both depth of knowledge and the ability to use it in service of an organisation whose purpose is to strengthen communities. That combination matters as much as the qualifications.

You'll need a strong financial background — ideally as a qualified or part-qualified accountant with experience in the charity sector, including a working understanding of restricted funds, grant finance and Charity SORP. Technical knowledge alone isn't enough: you'll need to be able to translate complex financial information into clear, accessible advice for managers, trustees and others who aren't finance specialists. Making the numbers understandable and useful is a core part of the job.

This role also has oversight of our HR Lead so we're looking for someone who's comfortable holding this. You don't need to be a specialist but you'll need to approach our role as an employer with the same values-led mindset we bring to everything else — embedding equity and inclusion in practice, not just in policy.

This is a role that requires sound judgement and a high degree of integrity. You'll be handling sensitive financial and people-related information, advising the Chief Executive and Board, and supporting managers across the organisation. People will need to feel they can rely on your advice and come to you with difficult questions. Building and maintaining that trust will be central to how you work.

Strong communication skills are essential. You'll be producing financial reports and HR papers for the Board and its subgroups, supporting managers who may be less confident in financial or people management, and helping embed systems that work for everyone. Being clear, patient and accessible in how you communicate will matter as much as being accurate.

We want Macc to lead by example — as an employer, as a financial steward and as a values-based organisation. We're looking for someone who sees good governance and inclusive practice not as administrative obligations, but as part of what it means to do this work well.

This role will suit someone who's energised by the breadth of it — finance and HR, strategic and operational, specialist and generalist. If bringing rigour, integrity and a genuine commitment to equity to a community organisation sounds like the right challenge for you, we'd love to hear from you.

You need to be willing and able to travel around Manchester — though driving ability is not essential as we encourage use of public transport and active travel.

How to apply

If you’re excited by this role and believe you can bring to it the skills and passion we’re looking for, we’d love to hear from you! Here’s how our recruitment process works:

1: Application form
Attached with this pack is a short application form in which we ask you for some basic details and a few questions about your skills, knowledge and relevant experience. There is also an equalities monitoring form with simple questions and a privacy statement which we ask you to confirm you have read. Once you’ve completed the form, please email it to: rabia@macc.org.uk

We acknowledge all applications by e-mail (or post if email is not available) within 2 working days of receipt. If you don’t receive an acknowledgement, please contact us as soon as possible: if you haven’t heard from us, we may not have received your application.

2: Rolling recruitment
As this is our second round of recruitment for this position, we will be running a “rolling” process. This means that instead of a single closing date, we're reviewing applications in rounds as they come in. Applications received by 12pm midday 30th October 2026 will be reviewed together as our 2nd round. Interviews for this round are scheduled for 25th November 2026. If we don't appoint from that round, we'll keep the vacancy open and review further applications every [10 working days] after that.

All applications are assessed against the same criteria, so you're always compared fairly against what we’re looking for – applying a bit later doesn't put you at a disadvantage. The vacancy will close as soon as we appoint someone, which could happen before every round has taken place. If that happens while your application is still waiting to be reviewed, we'll let you know as soon as we can.

Our advice is if you're interested, don't wait – apply as soon as you're ready.

3: Interviews
We will review all the applications we receive and may choose to hold a short informal conversation with shortlisted candidates. This is held online and helps us make the final decision about who to invite for a formal in-person interview.

In-person interviews are usually held at our offices at St Thomas Centre in Ardwick. The interviews gives us a chance to explore your application in more detail – and also for you to ask us questions about the role and our organisation. We may ask you to prepare a task in advance if that’s appropriate for the role.

If you are invited to interview, we’ll give you a copy of the questions when you arrive so you can have a few minutes to prepare your thoughts. After the interview we also give you an opportunity to share any feedback – or make a note of anything you forgot to mention.
