MAHSE Patient or Public Involvement (PPI) Representative – Helping to shape healthcare scientist education through your experiences

The Manchester Academy for Healthcare Scientist Education (MAHSE) is a partnership between universities and healthcare organisations. It delivers training programmes for healthcare scientists that work in the NHS. Some of these scientists work directly with patients, and others work more ‘behind the scenes’.

MAHSE Patient Forum
Patients and the public are increasingly involved as partners in making decisions to support their own healthcare. To help the students to develop patient-facing skills, MAHSE work with the Patient Forum. Members of the public and patients share insights into how to improve quality and safety within the NHS.

If you join, you will use your lived experience of different health conditions or your interest in improving healthcare to support the students. For example, you might help healthcare scientists to consider the language they are using and say what you think of their research ideas or help them to understand patient experiences.

Could this be for you?
Your experiences, ideas and perspectives matter. They help ensure the students learn in ways that reflect real life and support compassionate, person-centred care. People from all walks of life are welcome, particularly those who either:

  • Use or have used NHS services
  • Care for someone who uses NHS services
  • Have a personal interest in healthcare and education

What would you be doing?
As a MAHSE Patient or Public Involvement (PPI) Representative, you would share your perspective as a patient, carer or member of the public to help shape programmes and support student learning.

There are both online and in-person opportunities.

Payment
Most PPI representatives are paid as casual workers through the University of Manchester, currently at £25.30 per hour. In addition to this, you will also receive pro-rata holiday pay, making a total current payment per hour of £28.34. You will complete an online monthly expenses form for any paid activities. Payments are usually made monthly. Payment can affect benefits.

To apply complete the attached application form and email it to lisa.wright@manchester.ac.uk or complete the online application form by 22nd November 2026.
