The Greater Manchester Independent Mental Health Network (IMHN) are hosting a 4-part course on trauma-informed working on Thursday evenings in Autumn 2022.
The course will look at trauma-informed insights, information and skills related to peer support groups.
Part 1 – 29 September, 6.30pm - 8pm:
- Gain knowledge about what is trauma and trauma informed work
- Increase understanding of the impact of trauma on neurobiology (nervous system and body)
- Understand why stabilisation is so important and learning different grounding skills
- Help develop an understanding how trauma can affect our ability to connect via the Polyvagal Theory
Part 2 – 13 October, 6.30pm - 8pm:
- Gaining more insight into group dynamics
- Develop an awareness of how we and others might operate from different survival responses
- Understanding the window of tolerance
- Learning about relational strategies and how we can help ourselves and others to come back into the window of tolerance
- Understanding empathic distress and the value of self-compassion
Part 3 – 3 November, 6.30pm - 8pm:
- Revisiting the impact of trauma Yerkes-Dodson’s law – exploring what the trainees have noticed in their groups since the last training
- Boundary Sea-saw Model about the different roles we might adopt depending on the group dynamic
- Stabilisation exercises in a group setting
- Exploring scenarios from a group setting and looking at how we might manage them
- Attending to any topics that might have arisen
Part 4 – 17 November, 6.30pm - 8pm:
- Self-care session
- Attending to the helper and ‘wounded helper’
- Allowing us to recognise what we need as we are offering support to others
About the trainer:
Theres Fickl is a counsellor with 25 years’ experience of working with people with trauma-related mental health issues. She creates a supportive learning environment and uses creative means in form of drawings and diagrams to illustrate complex ideas in a way that they can be understood. Theres will share from her work with her own clients to help deepen the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills.
