Allison Hulmes is a Welsh Romani social work academic and co-founder of the Romani & Traveller Social Work Association. Allison has been a social worker for 25 years and has practiced in adult safeguarding/deprivation of liberty safeguards and as a therapeutically trained social worker, with a focus on strengthening families. Allison is the Romani & Traveller Representative, International Federation of Social, and External Advisory Group member (Welsh Government), Anti-racist Wales Action Plan.
Mikey Lawrence is an Irish Traveller Community member and informal educationalist, who is keen to share his own lived and learnt experiences, to enhance understanding, and transform systems to better support community members.
Sally Carr MBE is and English Romany Gypsy Youth Work Professional ,Chairing the Safeguarding Advisory Group at the National Youth Agency, that has co-produced the standards for safeguarding across the youth sector in England.
Co-facilitated by community members and professional practitioners from across our communities, this session will explore how Romani Gypsy and Irish Travellers have experienced institutional safeguarding, addressing harms and mistrust, and what needs to change to ensure system competency in supporting our communities through safeguarding.
