This session explores the lived and learnt experiences of LGBTQ+ young people in sport, sharing insights and lessons that can be applied in other contexts outside of Sport.
Using over 35 years experience in the LGBTQ+ Youth Sector, Sally Carr will share the potential of Sport to safeguarding LGBTQ+ young people in school, club and community settings if done well.
Recognising Sport also has the potential to be sites of hostility and exclusion for LGBTQ+ young people, where safeguarding protections are neglected and harm can be caused.
Using the example of Pride Youth Games, an annual multi-sports and social festival for LGBTQ+ young people aged 16-25, the session will highlight how LGBTQ+ young peoples voice and leadership has informed the co-creation of a safer and inclusive sports event, that has enhanced LGBTQ+ safeguarding.
A newly developed audit tool for community sports settings by StreetGames UK in partnership with Pride Sports, will be highlighted to enhance inclusion and safeguarding LGBTQ+ in sport.
