Volunteers' Week Stories: Lindsay Rootham

Lindsay, 55, volunteers with Trafford Carers Centre.

I had volunteered for Carers in Bedfordshire for 3 years, and when I moved to Didsbury, Manchester, I knew I wanted to continue to volunteer within this area of support. I looked at the Volunteer Centre Manchester website, which gave details of local support for Carers. Fortunately Trafford Carers were recruiting for volunteers to join the Befriending Service.

I began the role in November 2020. I am part of the Carers Connections Service which has been set up to support Carers by offering regular calls for a chat and to provide a listening ear. The aim is to help Carers feel connected with the outside world, this has been a real lifeline especially due to the challenges of the last 18 months.

I enjoy helping people and enabling them to manage whatever situation they are in. It gives me a sense of achievement to hear how the service has made a real difference to Carers. It’s a very positive experience. Volunteering definitely gives you a sense of wellbeing and purpose. Having the opportunity to talk to new people and be part of something worthwhile has made a significant difference. It makes me feel happy; I look forward to my calls and enjoy being part of their day.

The role was new to me so I was apprehensive but I remember after my first few calls how relieved I felt because it had gone so well. One particular Carer was very emotional as she was grieving and felt very alone. A week after our conversation she said how it had made a real difference being able to have a good cry and talk about things and how she really appreciated the calls. It is something I would definitely recommend if they have the opportunity. I am sure very few people regret volunteering and there really is something for everyone.

Taking a step forward and trying something new is sometimes daunting but it is worth it, having the opportunity to meet different people and really making a difference are the rewards.
