Tommy, 71, from Blackley, volunteers with Being There.
I first got involved with volunteering when I was looking for a part time job and came across an advertisement in the Manchester Evening News for Being There. It looked rewarding so I thought I would find out more. This was back in 2009, and I have been volunteering since then – it has gone fast!
My role involves transporting cancer patients to hospital appointments and then bringing them back home. I enjoy the satisfaction I get from volunteering - knowing I have helped someone makes it very worthwhile. It is also good to get out of the house!
I didn’t realise until I started volunteering with Being There how many people have got cancer. It is amazing how many people there are and it feels good to help out these patients. They really appreciate it so you get a buzz out of it.
I would say to anyone thinking about volunteering to just give it a try! It makes me feel really satisfied knowing that I am helping other people. Seeing people get better is great! It is very sad when clients pass away but I also see lots of people get better.
