Manchester Pride

Background

Manchester Pride dates back to 1985 in the Gay Village following the support of the Labour Party, which appointed a gay officer. From 1986 Manchester City Council provided funding to hold an event and raise money for AIDS organisations and has later expanded to a full programme of activities across the August weekend. Manchester Pride forms part of a global pride movement that celebrates the improvements in equality and addresses the challenges of discrimination faced by LGBTQ+ people.

Below we have short interviews with Carl Austin-Behan OBE and Dr Paul Martin OBE on Manchester Pride and why it is important. You can watch a more indepth interviews with both Carl and Paul on our Prominent figures page.

We have collected information about, and interviews with prominent figures from the LGBTQ+ community in Manchester. We have researched events happening with different Pride organisations/groups, compiled volunteering opportunities and reading lists of authors and stories from the LGBTQ+ community.
