Leonard Cheshire Youth Campaigning and Journalism project: Change Makers

leonard cheshireChange Makers is a project for young people aged 16-25 with disabilities to explore issues in their local area and to design and run campaigns highlighting the issues and make change. Leonard Cheshire are currently operating in Glasgow, Swansea, Manchester and Belfast.

This is a great opportunity for the young people to:

  • Build teamwork skills
  • Build confidence
  • Make links in their community
  • Explore issues they want to see change
  • Build key skills for work and further study
  • To feed into wider work that we are doing at Leonard Cheshire
  • Build skills in campaigning, activism and in speaking out when things are not right

Leonard Cheshire are looking for 6 young people in each area to take part in a 6 month project (November 2020 to May 2021) split into two sections of reporting and campaigning. During the reporting stage the young people will speak to people in their communities, video and audio record their own experiences and highlight issues they are facing and want to highlight. Then we will take these stories and campaign on these topics. These can be any issues that impact people with disabilities. For example, the first groups in Glasgow and Swansea are exploring issues of accessibility in theme parks; lack of choice in education; and looking at highlighting their lockdown experiences.
