Disability and Development Partners (DDP) has been working with partners in least developed countries for over 30 years, facilitating positive change for marginalized communities. The Voices of Resilience project, developed in response to a 2023 survey by Rainbow Disability Nepal (RDN), addresses the struggles faced by queer disabled people in Kathmandu. The survey revealed that these individuals face challenges in establishing a recognised social identity, compounded by stigma and discrimination that limits their social, emotional, and economic opportunities. The intersection of disability and minoritized sexual or gender identities leads to social isolation, reduced access to services, and heightened vulnerability to violence, contributing to significant mental and physical health disparities.
In collaboration with DDP, RDN aims to combat this stigma through a media project featuring interviews with 20 queer disabled individuals, conducted by a prominent ally. These real-life stories will be edited into short videos for widespread dissemination. The project has several goals:
- Combat Social Stigma: Sharing personal experiences to normalize diverse identities and dispel stereotypes.
- Raise Awareness: Highlighting the challenges faced by queer disabled people and using evidence to advocate for their rights.
- Establish Identity: Public representation to break silence, affirm existence, and foster community.
- Leverage Social Media Influence: A well-known advocate amplifying the message to challenge prejudice and encourage empathy.
- Advocate for Change: Using platforms to push for policy reforms and support inclusive initiatives.
This initiative aims to create a more supportive environment for queer disabled people in Nepal, promoting dignity, respect, and social integration.
