Earlier today I read part of a new report by the King's Fund called ‘Re-imagining Community Services’. It analyses the progress made toward creating new models of community services and summarises some of the key principles that should guide the development. It’s illustrated by a number of case studies (some rather less convincing than others – Wigan as an exemplar of working with local assets – it doesn't even have an infrastructure provider since Wigan CVS collapsed a couple of years ago).
NHS at 70 will create the first shared social history of the NHS. Through collecting stories and artefacts from NHS patients and workers as well as politicians and the general public, the project will record its unique place in everyday, post-war British life. The 70th anniversary of the NHS in 2018 is a perfect opportunity to celebrate its past and reflect on its present and future.
Volunteering for Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust is immensely rewarding. You can help The Trust go that extra mile in saving lives by raising awareness in your local community about cervical cancer prevention by talking to people, delivering awareness sessions and information stands at health events. There are also opportunities for you to volunteer in GP practices.
Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust is working with Manchester Clinical Commissioning Group to better understand how women from minority ethnic communities living in Manchester feel about cervical screening (smear tests).
The End Child Poverty coalition has published figures providing a new child poverty map of the UK. The new figures reveal that there are now constituencies within the UK where more than half of children are growing up in poverty – compared to one in ten, in the areas with the lowest child poverty rates.
Locality is the national network of ambitious and enterprising community-led organisations, working together to help neighbourhoods thrive. They established the Commission on the Future of Localism in 2017, in partnership with Power to Change, and chaired by Lord Kerslake to consider how to reinvigorate localism and unlock the power of community. The ambition behind the Localism Act is in danger of waning, and the fundamental shift in power from Westminster to communities has not yet been achieved.
In the last twelve months over 70 events have been funded in the city of Manchester to highlight and promote the importance of reporting hate crimes but also to celebrate Manchester’s rich diversity and show how we work together to make our city so great.
The Ashworth Charitable Trust supports humanitarian charities in the UK and overseas. Their vision statement outlines their priorities of the importance of education, the need to support marginalised people, and the capacity of people and human nature. Applicants must be a registered charity in the UK.
