Founded in 1990, BHA (formerly Black Health Agency) is a health and social care charity that exists to challenge health equalities and support individuals, families and communities to improve their health and well-being.

BHA offer a range of services delivered at local, regional and national level. The areas of expertise include sexual health, community health education and engaging and involving individuals and communities in health and social care decision making.

Manchester BME communities to develop new local cervical cancer awareness campaigns

Representatives from BME groups throughout the country have come together in Manchester to discuss ways of improving awareness of cervical cancer and the benefits of cervical screening.

The event on 24 January, which was attended by over 50 participants, was co-hosted by the NHS Cervical Screening Programme and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust as part of Cervical Cancer Prevention Week 2013. It represents part of an ongoing drive to reach women from BME groups.

BME mental health survey – volunteers needed

Time to Change has commissioned ETHNOS Research & Consultancy to conduct a survey of people from Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups who have experienced mental illness. The aim of the survey is to identify the extent to which people experience discrimination as a result of their mental illness.

Anti-Stigma Research - £10 paid to participants

This is one of the largest surveys of its kind ever undertaken in this country.

BME women’s social enterprise learning group

Routes to Solidarity will shortly be running a small project on BME women and social enterprise. Routes to Solidarity will bring together a small number of BME women who are developing social enterprises and would like to get support in this work.

The idea is to host regular (maybe monthly) group sessions, each one focusing on a specific aspect of developing a social enterprise (e.g. market research, legal issues etc).

Volunteer Management Committee Member Opportunity at Chorlton Youth Project

Chorlton Youth Project works with young people throughout Chorlton in South Manchester to help them engage in positive activities and learn skills such as team building, confidence and respect.

Through the provision of space to meet in the evening and a daytime service for children on the verge of exclusion from school, Chorlton Youth Project works with some of the most ‘hard to reach’ young people helping them to find their place in society and improve their general health and wellbeing. Chorlton Youth Project also run a summer playscheme for younger children each year.

This training pack has been developed following the review and is for use within your organisations to train the multi-agency workforce. The powerpoint includes notes slides.

Key messages from the review are relevant to all organisations that work with children and young people and you should ensure that you can disseminate this information throughout your organisation.

Libraries and leisure consultations underway - have your say

Manchester City Council has launched consultations on its 2013-15 budget proposals for leisure centres and libraries and wants to hear people's views.

The Council as a whole has to address a funding shortfall of £80 million over the next two financial years and has set out in detail proposals for how it intends to achieve this.

The separate libraries and leisure consultations set out how the council proposes to deliver a quality, accessible service while making a contribution to the savings required.
