The Peak District Challenge 2013

This is a brand new walking or running challenge in the Peak District National Park (easily accessible from Manchester by public transport) that you can share and enter to help to raise funds for your favourite charity.

There are four different challenge lengths - 25, 50, 80 or 90km to choose from and there is a great team ensuring all the participants will have a great (and safe) time as they take it on.

The Challenge takes place from Friday 20 September to – Saturday 21 September 2013.

Web-based Gift Aid tool developed for smaller charities

Gift Aid specialists Kvisio have launched GiftAid Online, a web-based tool for small charities (those with under 1,000 supporters), who want to make Gift Aid claims online through the HMRC Gateway.

The tool has been developed following the changes in HMRC's rules for online tax claims.

New EU Procurement Laws

Procurement laws, or rather the poor application of them, can make a major difference in the ability of the Voluntary and Community Sector (VCS) to win and keep contracts. There has been continual criticism of the level of bureaucracy and inflexibility in EU procurement laws and as a result new laws are to be announced soon.

Superfast Broadband Grants

Manchester City Council for a time limited period can help fund broadband connection for small and medium-sized businesses, and charities, social enterprises and other not-for-profit organisations.

Manchester City Council will cover up to £3,000 of the connection costs. In most cases, the voucher (which will be accepted by most internet service providers, including the best-known household names) will cover the cost of getting connected, leaving you to just pay the VAT and monthly subscription cost.

Youth and Play Fund Evaluation

Voluntary Youth Manchester, Macc and Manchester City Council are jointly conducting an evaluation of the recent Youth and Play Fund Commissioning process.

I've mentioned previously that there's a danger that this blog becomes a series of rants about things I'm angry about. Well not today, at least!

Our State of the Voluntary Sector report shows there are over 3000 voluntary and community groups in Manchester. I don't know them all but I do know a lot of them and one of the great pleasures of my job is that I get to see some of the amazing things happening in groups across Manchester and meet some fantastic people.

Free trees for school, community and youth groups

The Woodland Trust have 4000 free tree packs to give away to school, community and youth groups this autumn.

Bring your community together to do something good for your neighbourhood by applying for the chance to receive a free tree pack to plant in November 2013.

Each pack is worth £30, £105 or £420. All you need to do is find a suitable site and supply the volunteer planters and tree protection.

Centre for Social Action Opens Rehabilitation Social Action Fund

The Cabinet Office Centre for Social Action has announced that the Rehabilitation Social Action Fund is now open for applications. This fund has been developed in partnership with the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and the National Offender Management Service (NOMS), drawing on consultation with 37 organisations throughout May 2013.
