Greater Manchester state of the sector launch

This short film includes presentations and interviews at the Launch of the Greater Manchester state of the sector report in May 2013. The report was compiled from the findings of the first survey of Greater Manchester's voluntary and community sector and includes key statistics on the impact of the sector.

Public Health England (PHE) are developing a voluntary and community sector (VCS) engagement strategy and are welcoming input from voluntary organisations.

They are currently building on comments already provided about VCS as advocates and mediators for public involvement, but would like some more specific and general information to get a feel for the best framework within which PHE can engage with voluntary organisations.

To promote this campaign and get young people involved they have decided to run a competition to promote their campaign, and have designed a poster to promote it.

Survey on sustainability education at MMU

The Environment Team at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) is currently carrying out a research project around attitudes towards Education for Sustainable Development in relation to employability.

The results from the survey will inform the university's actions on embedding Education for Sustainable Development into the curriculum. It could impact on 30,000 students per year.

Help Compact Voice understand what’s happening locally

The third annual survey of Local Compacts is now open. Compact Voice are encouraging anyone with a knowledge of Compact working or government policy to take 10 minutes to fill in the survey. They are offering everyone who completes the survey the chance to win an Amazon Kindle Paperwhite.

It is really important that Compact Voice are able to gain an understanding of the issues, challenges and successes experienced by local Compacts across the country, and the survey provides a vital way of doing this.

1. In 2012/13 there were 3,093 community and voluntary organisations, co-operatives and social enterprises in Manchester

2. In 2012/13 the total income of the sector was £477 million

3. Medium and large organisations receive 95% of the total sector income

4. 1,987 organisations are micro (with an annual income under £10 thousand)

5. There are 94,300 volunteers in the sector

6. Volunteers give 370,000 hours each week

7. The contribution of volunteers in the sector is valued at £332 million each year

This morning I was in the happy position of being able to present our new research into the state of the voluntary sector in Manchester. It has been a long-held ambition of mine to be able to show the full extent of the enormous contribution which voluntary organisations, community groups, social enterprises and the community work of faith groups make to the city. 

Almanac data shows charities subdued by financial climate

New data released from NCVO’s UK Civil Society Almanac 2013 shows the powerful effect that high inflation had on charity sector finances in recent years. NCVO's UK Civil Society Almanac 2013 examines charities' accounts for financial year 2010/11.

In cash terms, the charity sector generated an extra £2bn in income in 2010/11 compared to the previous year, with a total income of £38.3bn. But rising costs – inflation was at 5% – wiped out the effect of this increase and meant that the sector’s real-terms income was almost identical to its level in 2009/10.
