Research: The impact of the cost-of-living crisis on older ethnic minority people in Greater Manchester

This research is being carried out by members of the Manchester Urban Ageing Research Group (MUARG) based at the University of Manchester. The group have been involved in a range of image: surveyprojects over the past two decades, developing innovative research on the lives of older people living in areas where there is often a mix of low incomes and poor housing.

Re-engage: Helping to alleviate Loneliness and isolation

Re-engage aim to alleviate loneliness and isolation in people aged 75+ by providing free Tea Parties once a month on a Sunday. Volunteer drivers collect the guests from their homes then drop them older peopleback again after they have enjoyed tea/coffee, cake and a chat. Re-engage also offer a Call Companion service for those people who could just do with a chat on the phone rather than leaving their home.

On 14 December 1990, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 1 as the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) (resolution 45/106). This was preceded by initiatives such as the Vienna International Plan of Action on Ageing, which was adopted by the 1982 World Assembly on Ageing and endorsed later that year by the UN General Assembly.

Sleep Talkers – connecting communities for better sleep

The Sleep Charity have been running a new project called ‘Sleep Talkers’ since November which is designed to improve sleep issues. This is done through a ‘Train the Trainer’ approach with a focus on upskilling volunteers. The Sleep Charity sleep talkershave trained over 100 professionals since March and received excellent feedback! In September The Sleep Charity launched a second Sleep Talkers community ‘Adults 50+’.

Cost-of-living Grants Fund

In response to the cost-of-living crisis Independent Age are looking to provide 25 grants of £40,000 (£1million total) to charities and community organisations to get more money into the pockets of older people and help ensure they do not have to choose between buying food to eat and heating their home this winter.  Projects must be in addition to or an extension of existing work – the grants cannot fund business-as-usual projects.
