Consultation on Advocacy Services in Manchester

Manchester City Council is holding meetings on Tuesday 2 September 2014 and Friday 26 September 2014 to consult on proposals for a new Advocacy Hub.

The Care Act 2014 requires the City Council to provide independent advocacy for those who may have difficulty understanding and participating in the assessment process. An advocate provides support to an individual to help them express their needs and wishes, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain the care and support they need

Macmillan Supporting You to Help Others Grant – next deadline 30 August 2014

Macmillan provides grants for groups and individuals who support people affected by cancer or campaign to improve cancer care.

What sort of things can I apply for a Supporting You to Help Others grant for?
• Start up costs for a Self-help and Support group
• Development applications e.g. for groups to expand and extend their reach for both Self Help and Support and User Involvement
• Combined applications for those that include Self Help and Support and User Involvement

 Out of the many reasons I applied for an internship, probably the one I dwelt on most was the fear of being unprepared for the real world come summer 2015 when I graduate. As I scrolled through available opportunities nothing appeared to spring out at me and I had almost become resigned to the fact that I would return home for the summer in search of any sort of employment that would tide me over till September.

One of the things I love most about working in the voluntary sector is that if you have a really good idea you can generally find a way to make it happen. It might take a while – things like our State of the Sector and Civil Economy work were on my wishlist for years before we were finally able to publish the finished work. But sometimes you can be taken by surprise at how fast you can go from the idea to it actually happening.

Healthier Together Public Consultation launch

A major review of the future of Greater Manchester’s health and care services has been launched. Led by the 12 Greater Manchester Clinical Commissioning Groups, the Healthier Together programme is reviewing health and care across the region with the aim of making sure that local people have the best health and care in the country.

They want to deliver the best health and care in the country for the people of Greater Manchester which is why their vision proposes better access to GPs, better services in the community and hospitals sharing their expert clinicians across boundaries.

BikeRight!

BikeRight! are based in Openshaw and deliver cycle training from funding from Manchester Public Health and Manchester City Council. Anyone that wants to learn to ride, improve their riding or commute to work on major roads can have cycle training provided they live in Manchester City council boundaries, or work for the council or NHS.

2015 GSK IMPACT Awards

The GSK IMPACT Awards are designed to recognise and reward charities that are doing excellent work to improve people’s health. They are funded by GlaxoSmithKline and managed in partnership with The King’s Fund.

The awards are open to registered charities that are at least three years old, working in a health-related field in the UK, with a total annual income between £25,000 and £2 million.

Healthier Together equality impact assessment - local meetings

The formal consultation on Healthier Together will be starting soon in parallel with this process, there is an equality impact assessment; this is being carried out by consultants guided by a small steering group which has just held its first meeting, and of which GMCVO is a member.

Heart Research UK and Subway Healthy Heart Grants

Heart Research UK (HRUK) and Subway® Healthy Heart Grants of up to £10,000 are available for new, original and innovative projects that actively promote Heart Health and help to prevent, or reduce, the risk of heart disease in specific groups or communities.

The HRUK and SUBWAY® Healthy Heart Grant is only available for projects that actively promote heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease. A funding pot of £10,000 is available in each region.

Only community or voluntary organisations, registered charities or other not for profit organisations may apply.
