I'm being a bit cheeky calling this one a blog as 99.99% of this page is not by me at all. However, this is a good place to share it.

Below is a talk given by an American activist and fundraiser called Dan Pallotta. He brilliantly sums up some of the attitudes which distort the way the charity sector functions. I heartily agree with a lot of what he says - it's well worth watching.

I can’t help feeling that the news that yet another hole has opened in the ground in Manchester is too good a metaphor to waste. While the city is clearly enjoying economic success and is at the forefront of the devolution agenda, we’re also seeing increasing numbers of people sleeping rough, public services under threat due to budget cuts and enormous pressure on voluntary and...

There’s a report in today’s Manchester Evening News which tells about further massive cuts to mental health services in Manchester and that the Manchester Health and Social Care Trust is expected to close down completely.

While none of the detail has, as far as I can see been officially confirmed or denied as yet, I don’t think anyone who knows...

Our open data on groups and volunteers has been updated and added to our website.

Last year I attended a Discovering Neighbourhood Statistics workshop run by the University of Manchester, it was a great workshop that gave a really good overview and insight on how to use the Office of National Statistics ...

A few weeks back I met with a group of voluntary & community sector leaders working with children young people and families and our local Director of Children's Services. We were talking about how to build the relationship between the sectors so we hit on the idea of writing a blog to challenge a few myths and misconceptions which tend to distort the relationship.

What follows was written for an audience of people working in the public sector and in social services roles. That said, there is enough here which is generally true of the relationships between the sectors...

I wasn't sure whether it would be approriate or useful to add more words to everything which is being written about this sad situation but there's a lesson here which I think is being missed.

A legitimate question you might ask among all the media noise about the closure of Kids Company is “Where are the Trustees?” They’re the ones ultimately responsible for the charity, after all. They’re in a difficult position: having taken the decision to close the charity they can’t say anything much publicly as there are all kinds of legal issues for them to deal with: not least the...

Our groups and volunteers data has been updated to include data for the first quarter of 2015/16.

Mike Wild, Chief Executive at Macc, has released a video talking about why we decided to release open data and the data we’ve made available for everyone.

Challenge from Mike - What data do you share and how are you sharing it?

We’re keen to encourage as many groups as possible to share their data and we’d like to hear from you about your experiences.

What data do you already put together, for...

“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

I've not really said anything much in this blog about Greater Manchester Devolution yet. That's largely because almost as soon as you write anything down about Devolution, it's out of date: suddenly there’s another new announcement about new “powers” being given to Greater Manchester. There’s not been anything substantial in these announcements about the role of the voluntary and community sector so far which might give the impression that nothing is happening...
