Volunteering by asylum seekers

Following a campaign by Refugee Action and NCVO, the Home Office issued revised guidance on 28 October making clear that it is not unlawful for refused asylum seekers to volunteer.

The guidance now allows asylum seekers to volunteer for public sector bodies, as well as charities, other voluntary organisations and fundraising bodies as they previously could.

Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP)

Over the last few months, as part of Volunteer Infrastructure Project (VIP) Greater Manchester Youth Network (GMYN) have been visiting organisations, who are working with young people in the central Manchester district, to find out their experiences and hopes of involving volunteers within this delivery. The next phase of this project aims to bring these discussions forward to develop the VIP offer for the New Year, in part through two surveys (one for organisations/individual workers to complete and one for volunteers).

Code of practice for volunteers

Volunteering England and Association of British Insurers short code of practice for volunteers, providing reassurance and basic guidance about the risks of volunteering.

"Volunteering is not a generally risky activity", states a one-page code of practice for volunteers issued in May 2012 by Volunteering England (now part of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations) and the Association of British Insurers.

‘The Big I Am’ – A youth led magazine for Manchester

The participation project at Voluntary Youth Manchester (VYM) has really taken off and consultations have been well underway with young people across the city consulting on what they think a new Manchester Youth magazine should look like, what size it should be and what content it should include. The new magazine will be online and in print and will have an accompanying dedicated Vimeo/YouTube channel all of which will be under the title ‘The Big I Am’

Trustees at The Roby

The Roby is a small charity in the heart of Manchester that provides support to people with mental health problems. The Roby have an excellent reputation in Manchester, a hard working staff and volunteer group and a dedicated board of trustees.

The Roby are facing a challenging year in terms of future funding and need new dynamic trustees who are willing to get involved in overseeing the organisation through the current challenges.

National Testing Week 22 - 29 November 2013

Undiagnosed HIV infection remains unacceptably high among gay and bisexual (GB) men: one in five GB men with HIV do not know they have it, and up to eight in ten new infections in this population are estimated to come from them.

National HIV Testing Week (NHTW) was developed and is managed nationally across England by Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) on behalf of HIV Prevention England (HPE), as part of the drive to reduce undiagnosed infection among various populations including GB men.

New Cabinet Office Fund Launched for Vulnerable and Disengaged Young People in England

The Fund is being administered by the Social Investment Businesses on behalf of the Cabinet Office, and aims to help grow ambitious social action programmes in England.

Grants of between £30,000 and £250,000 are available to fund work with young offenders, young people in care or leaving care, and other groups of disengaged and vulnerable young people such as those not in education, employment or training (NEETs) or with special educational needs or disabilities. Projects must serve young people between the ages of 9 and 24, or young offenders aged 10 to 18 years.
