A Civil Economy for Manchester

Could Manchester be Europe’s answer to America’s hippest city - Portland, Oregon?

Manchester has enjoyed solid economic success, there is now an opportunity for a ‘new wave’ to Manchester’s future. A new report A Civil Economy for Manchester, prepared for Macc by the think-do tank the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) demonstrates how this new wave is about unleashing the power of citizens, social and voluntary group.

Think Local Act Personal are seeking case studies relating to people with mental health needs

Think Local Act Personal (TLAP) are looking for case studies from providers, commissioners or ULOs showing what person centred support can look like within mental health services and across community based support.

As part of TLAP’s programme of extending Making it Real to people with mental health needs, they have been asked by NHS England to produce some materials along with National Voices – focussing on Making it Real ‘narratives’.

Better Care Fund

The Better Care Fund by the government was announced in June 2013. It is a funding mechamism, covering the period 2014/15 and 2015/16 intended to incentivise integration of health and social services and more specifically to reduce hospital admissions. North, Central and South Cliinical Commissioning Groups, together with Manchester City Council will decide shortly how their slice of national funding will be spent, as projects need to be put in place rapidly.

Wellbeing and Health Policy

The Department of Health has published a suite of evidence summaries on why wellbeing matters to health throughout someone’s life, and what policy makers can do about it.

For health professionals, understanding the different parts of personal wellbeing may offer insights into how their own work fits into a wider context and how what they do can influence wellbeing. Manchester Mental Health Recovery Network (Peer Support)

This, the third meeting of the Recovery Network focused on developing peer support networks and services. 40 people attended including: people who use mental health services; informal carers/family members; people who work in voluntary and statutory sector mental health services and; people with responsibility for commissioning mental health services.

The Challenge for Manchester

Before Christmas, Mike Wild (Chief Executive of Macc) and Nigel Rose (Macc’s Strategic Lead on Commissioning) met with Geoff Little (Deputy Chief Executive of Manchester City Council) and Carol Culley (Assistant Chief Executive, Finance and Performance).  We wanted to discuss the impact not just of the next wave of public sector cuts but the prolonged effects of recession. We also wanted to explore the Council’s views on how the voluntary and community sector can rise to meet the challenges faced by the communities in Manchester.

Greater Manchester Work Programme Leavers Tender

A new 3 year tender has been issued by Salford Local Authority on behalf of all the Greater Manchester Authorities for support into employment for people who have gone through the work programme and have not got a job. Bidders can apply to deliver support just for Manchester or for multiple authorities.  There is a meeting for potential applicants in Manchester on Thursday 5th December from 2-4pm at Friends Meeting House, 6 Mount St, M2 5NS.

Manchester City Council consults on mental health and wellbeing services

Residents are being asked for their views to help Manchester City Council shape the future of mental health and wellbeing services in the city.

These are currently provided through a partnership between Manchester City Council and the NHS who are both looking at how these services are delivered within the city and how the system can be improved.

Trustees at The Roby

The Roby is a small charity in the heart of Manchester that provides support to people with mental health problems. The Roby have an excellent reputation in Manchester, a hard working staff and volunteer group and a dedicated board of trustees.

The Roby are facing a challenging year in terms of future funding and need new dynamic trustees who are willing to get involved in overseeing the organisation through the current challenges.
