If hard work alone can make something a success, then Manchester-based BiPhoria, the UK’s oldest bisexual community organisation, deserves to have the best Bi Visibility Day ever. Now in its 18th year, the day came about as a result of people who attended an international Gay and Lesbian festival deciding to take action so that Bisexual people were represented as well. In its first year, the day was celebrated in just three locations: the US, South Africa – and Manchester! Now it’s celebrated across the world on 23rd September every year.

Last night (Wednesday 21st September), George House Trust (GHT) held its Annual General Meeting. It has a unique governance structure, one that fully involves the people who use GHT services and the volunteers. It is part of what makes the culture of GHT, a culture where everyone is valued, everyone is equal.

Our State of the Sector Survey in 2013 found that there were 3,093 voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations in Manchester, with an estimated income of £477 million. The sector employed the equivalent of 12,400 full time staff and 94,300 volunteers gave 370,000 hours, with an estimated value of £332 million. Decision makers took note of the survey results, we know it increased their understanding of the sector. Some of the key facts (3093 organisations, 94,300 volunteers) are now widely quoted by colleagues in the Council, the NHS and other bodies such as Big Lottery Fund.

The People’s History Museum is currently working on an exciting community-led project to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, which partially decriminalised homosexual acts. Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Never Going Underground: The fight for LGBT+ rights will focus on the fight for equality for those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans* and other gender and sexuality minorities (LGBT+). The project will include a major programme of events including a landmark exhibition to open in February 2017 developed by a team of Community Curators.

Voting is now open to vote for the Best Community Space Spirit of Manchester Award 2016.

Award criteria
A community space can be a piece of land or a building available for use by the community. Organisations needed to show:
• Best use of a community space
• How the space is seen as central within the community
• The impact it has within the local community

LGBT Foundation are recruiting for new Trustees to join their board. LGBT Foundation are seeking highly skilled and senior managers across all sectors who can bring influence, professional knowledge and experience to the organisation in the following areas:
• Health/with an NHS Background
• Research, Insight and Policy
• Legal/Governance/with Company Secretary background
• Commercial expertise and background

LGBT Foundation are hosting a Hate Crime Vigil in Sackville Gardens in the heart of Manchester’s Gay Village to commemorate International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT) on Tuesday 17 May from 6-7pm.

This is an opportunity for the community to come together and commemorate those who have been the victims of hate crime.

Better Things is a safe, friendly and supportive place for Lesbian, Gay, Bi and Trans people who have a learning disability.

You can share feelings, talk about fears or issues. Make new friends – it is free, it is friendly and it is fun.
