Let's End Hate Crime - Grants available for activities in your neighbourhood

Manchester wants to end hate crime by building on the City's reputation for celebrating diversity. You can help do this by holding an event or activity in your neighbourhood during Hate Crime Awareness Week 2015. Events should raise awareness of hate crimes and encourage reporting.

Today We Are Angry, Tomorrow We Must Talk

A lot of people in the local voluntary sector are going to be very angry today. They’re going to feel threatened, undervalued, rejected and hopeless. The Council’s budget proposals will make horrible reading for many people who’ve been working very hard for a long time to make a difference in the city. For some groups this will mean cuts to services and activities. For many it will mean many job losses – the sector is an employer too, after all. For some this may be the last straw and we may see the end of a number of organisations that have made a great contribution to the city.

Manchester City Council budget cuts and options for consultation

Manchester City Council have released the following information on their budget cuts:

‘The Council’s difficult financial situation has seen us make £250million of cuts in the last few years.

This year our overall budget is just over £560m.

The latest financial indications from the government show further reductions are required. The Council has therefore produced options to address an estimated funding shortfall of £59m in 2015/16, possibly rising to £91 million in 2016/17.

Since 2010 the amount we have to spend on services has dropped by over 40%.

Round Tables Needed!

Does your community building, centre or church hall have a number of round tables you would be willing to lend to MERCI (Manchester Environmental Resource Centre Initiative)?

We have a series of workshops coming up in our building, Bridge 5 Mill, in Ancoats which require round ‘seminar style’ tables. We can go to a commercial event hire company but thought it might be an idea to ask community organisations first as we’d be able to give you a sizable donation towards the hire.

We’re looking to seat 60, so would need 10/11 4ft tables or 8 6/7ft tables.

Funding available from Manchester Metropolitan University to recruit a Graduate Intern

Manchester Metropolitan University’s GradMatch provides funding for organisations to recruit 2014 graduates for 8-week internships.

This year’s GradMatch scheme enables graduates to gain paid work experience in a range of industries in the North West and will fund up to 100 paid internships. It provides organisations with £1,000 to put towards their intern’s salary, with organisations contributing an additional £1,000 to provide the graduate with National Minimum Wage for the full 8-week internship.

Homophobic, Biphobic and Transphobic Bullying Grant Launched in England

Voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations with creative ideas to tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying in England's schools and playgrounds are being encouraged to apply to the one-off £2 million fund.

Grants of between £100,000 and £750,000 are expected to be awarded for projects that are innovative, sustainable, of national significance, and support one, or more, of the following suggested areas:

Social Value Act: review

On 26 September 2014 the government announced a review of the Social Value Act. Lord Young, the Prime Minister’s Adviser on Enterprise, is leading the review, supported by Chris White MP, Hazel Blears MP, the Federation of Small Businesses, and Michael O’Toole, chief executive of Mentor UK.

The review is looking at how the act is working and whether it would be beneficial to extend it. It also looks at how the act might be extended in a way that continues to support small businesses and voluntary, charity and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations to bid for public contracts.
